Practice Times

Spring 2013

The outdoor recreational rowing season starts in April and runs through early November.  The adult rowing program has two components: 1) Recreational rowing and 2) Competitive rowing.

At GRRA our objective is to offer a good rowing experience to both competitive and non-competitive rowers.

Recreational Rowing
Head Coach Dave Morrison
.
GOAL
Recreational rowing focuses largely on giving participants solid aerobic exercise, a great social experience with other rowers, but little training devoted towards competition at regattas... rowers unable to participate in the competitive program but wishing to race may consider forming independent crews with other certified rowers.
.
PRACTICE TIMES
Adult rec practices begin April 10, 2013 and are held every Wednesday beginning at 6:00 pm (please try to arrive at least 15 minutes early to stretch out and be ready to go!) and run for approximately two hours. Saturday practices begin at 8:00 am and will run until 9:30.
.
DUES
Rec practices are open to all current members who have also paid the $100 crew fee.
Competitive Crews
Head Coach Lauren Holben
 .
GOAL
The competitive rowing program will aim to push athletes to a higher level of performance, with the expectation to compete in regattas with other competitive athletes.
.
PRACTICE TIMES
Competitive practices will begin on Monday, May 20, 2013 and are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 5:15 to 7:00 AM (please try to arrive about 15 minutes early to help maximize training time on the water). Crew members are expected to be at all practices, on time, and will give 100% effort at practice and at regattas.
.
GETTING ON A CREW
Rowers interested in joining the competitive team should attend the rec practices on Wednesday evenings beginning on April 10, and express your interest to Coach Lauren Holben. Tryouts are required for seats on the competitive squad, and relevant details will be posted at the boathouse and on this website. Boat selection will be made during the week of May 13 and will be posted at the boathouse and on this website. Members joining the club or wishing to join the competitive team mid-season may be accepted with tryouts and with the express permission of the Head Coach, or may be asked to return to try out for the next season.
.
RACE SCHEDULE
Athletes should plan to compete in the following regattas:
June 22: Grand Regatta/State Games of Michigan (Grand Rapids*)
July 20: Michigan Club Invitational (Ann Arbor)
August 17: Capital City Sprints (Lansing)
September 28: Grand River Challenge (Grand Rapids*)
October TBA: The Leelanau Chase (Lake Leelanau)
There is a possibility of travel to other regional or national regattas... this will be determined on a crew-by-crew basis.
* starred events are home regattas, at which athletes will be expected to volunteer as well. Don't worry, your volunteer shift will be scheduled to allow time for warming up and racing.
.
DUES
Dues for selected crew members are $300 (if the $100 crew fee has already been paid, that will count towards dues). Fees for uniforms and regatta entries are not included in dues.
.
HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS
Competitive crew members are welcome to attend recreational practices on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.

See you at the boathouse!
