Learn to Scull 102: Sculling for Beginners (Dates changed) (07 May 2013)

Please note the new dates since the class was postponed one week due to flooding: The class will meet Tuesday 5/14, Thursday 5/16, Tuesday 5/21, and Thursday 5/23, with a final shared session and cookout on Friday May 24. We apologize for the inconvenience.

This program meets twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 - 8pm at the Grand Rapids boathouse. Additionally, there is a final mini-regatta and cookout at 6 pm on Friday, May 24 (at which family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend). Please mark that date on your calendar.

The class is designed for beginners as well as advanced adults who have either participated in a previous session or have rowing experience. Beginners will be taught sculling in recreational single shells. Participants will have opportunities for informal racing, but the intensity of all sessions will be based on the ability and desire of the participants.

The content of sessions 101-103 is the same; intermediate (200 level) and advanced (300 level) classes are also available.

What to bring: Rowing is a good workout. Wear workout clothes. Wear tight-fitting shorts (spandex if you dare), as loose-fitting clothes will get caught in the rowing shell's mechanisms. Wear socks that you are not afraid to get dirty - really dirty - and shoes that you can easily slip off.

Bring some bug spray and sunglasses, and a full water bottle to every practice.

Rowing is a water sport. We could row in the rain, so a towel and change of clothes in your car would also be a good idea.

Attendance is limited to 10 participants so sign up now!

Please note: As all classes take place outdoors, we have periodically been forced to cancel individual class periods due to flooding or bad weather. We guarantee that we will hold at least 3 of 4 scheduled class periods - and typically are able to "make up" lost classes, as well.

IMPORTANT: All participants will need to read, print, and bring this (signed) waiver to the first session! We must have a signed waiver from you in order to place you in a boat!

(Waiver requires Adobe Acrobat Reader. Download the free Reader software here.)

Learn To Row 104: Beginning Sweep Rowing (24 Jun 2013)

This program meets twice weekly, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 - 8 pm at the Grand Rapids boathouse. Additionally, there will be a final mini-regatta and cookout (at which family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend!) at 6 pm on Friday, July 19 at the boathouse. Please mark that date on your calendar.

The class is designed for first time beginners as well as advanced adults who have either participated in a previous session or have rowing experience. Beginners will be taught the basics of the rowing stroke, how to handle the equipment and will spend much of the time on the water enjoying the sport. The content of sessions 101-105 is the same; intermediate (200 level) and advanced (300 level) classes are also available.

The intensity of all sessions will be based on the ability and desire of the participants.

We recommend bringing bug spray, sunglasses, and a full water bottle to every practice.

Rowing is a water sport. We could row in the rain, so a towel and change of clothes in your car is also a good idea.

Please note: As all classes take place outdoors, we have periodically been forced to cancel individual class periods due to flooding or bad weather. We guarantee that we will hold at least 7 of 8 scheduled class periods - and typically are able to "make up" lost classes, as well.

Attendance is limited so sign up now!

IMPORTANT: All participants will need to read, print, and bring this (signed) waiver to the first session! We must have a signed waiver from you in order to place you in a boat!

This program meets twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 - 8pm at the Grand Rapids boathouse. Additionally, there is a final mini-regatta and cookout at 6 pm on Friday, August 23 (at which family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend). Please mark that date on your calendar.

The class is designed for scullers who have either participated in a previous 200-level sculling class or have other substantial experience. Participants will exclusively use racing shells (and comfortably so), will learn race strategies and advanced techniques with which to maximize their efficiency and power on the water. Participants will have opportunities for informal racing, but the intensity of all sessions will be based on the ability and desire of the participants.

The content of sessions 301 & 302 is the same.

Attendance is limited to 6 participants so sign up now!

Please note: As all classes take place outdoors, we have periodically been forced to cancel individual class periods due to flooding or bad weather. We guarantee that we will hold at least 3 of 4 scheduled class periods - and typically are able to "make up" lost classes, as well.

IMPORTANT: All participants that have not previously taken a 2013 GRRA class or are not a club member will need to read, print, and bring this (signed) waiver to the first session! We must have a signed waiver from you in order to place you in a boat!

(Waiver requires Adobe Acrobat Reader. Download the free Reader software here.)
